A man kidnapped his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son and fled in his car before crashing into a tree, killing himself and the toddler early Thursday morning in Plantation, Florida, officials said.

Plantation police say Ryan Yates, 25, grabbed the child, James Oizan-Chapon, and attempted to escape in his mother’s black 2014 Mercedes-Benz, Yasmin Cid, around 3:30 a.m. .

Yates lost control of the car and crashed into a tree, causing the car to burn, police said. Yates and Oizan-Chapon were pronounced dead at the scene.

“I heard two thunderous sounds right after the accident and a woman crying for her baby,” neighbor Frances Velaco told NBC Miami.

“She was like, ‘My baby! My baby!’ And I started to cry when I heard that because I felt really helpless and there was nothing I could do about it. “

According to ABC affiliate WPLG of Miami, Yates and Cid got into a fight before taking off with Oizan-Chapon as Cid unsuccessfully tried to free the boy. The Oizan-Chapon family set up a GoFundMe to cover funeral costs. A photo at the fundraising site shows the child with gaping teeth smiling with his hands on his head.

“Our little boy tragically died in a car accident. As you can imagine, no family ever prepares for a tragedy like this,” the page read.

Video footage of the crash showed the car was on fire and debris could be seen strewn on the road. Tiffany Velasquez, the boy’s aunt, called Oizan-Chapon a fun, fearless little boy who “loved chicken nuggets,” according to NBC Miami.

“It’s not something that anyone prepares you for,” she said. “There are no words one can muster for something like this. It’s so unfortunate and he didn’t deserve this. He deserved the opportunity to live a great, full life.
