Santa Barbara County Sheriff – The coroner publishes the updated number of victims found after the design incident

Search and recovery efforts continue today for the only casualty of the Conception Boat disaster that occurred early Monday morning. A devastating fire consumed the ship when it was moored in the Platt Harbor north of Santa Cruz Island in Santa Barbara County.

On Tuesday, September 3, 2019, search and recovery efforts resulted in the location of 13 additional victims, which adds to the 20 victims already found in previous proceedings. Most of the victims were found thanks to the technical skills of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's diving team, who managed to get in the boat to find the victims. The remains of the victim were transported to the sheriff's coroner's office in Santa Barbara, where the identification process began. The coroner's office received a total of 33 victims of the incident. The coroner's office is responsible for identifying each victim and determining the cause and manner of death. The remains of the victims of this incident have suffered various damage as a result of the devastating fire, requiring DNA analysis to facilitate the process of identification.

The search for the last remaining victim is continuing today. The Los Angeles Port Police, who participated in yesterday's efforts, will continue to use sonar mapping technology to map the ocean floor of the designated search area, allowing divers to target specific areas of interest. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dive Team and the FBI Diving Team will largely assist the underwater search and recovery team at the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Office. The National Parks Service, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the San Luis Obispo Sheriff's Office, the Ventura Sheriff's Office, the Orange County Sheriff's Office, the Long Beach Police Department and US coastguards all participate in search and recovery operations. Support includes stage safety, surface support for diving teams, security and logistical support.

Diving teams report that search conditions remain favorable, with good weather and light currents. Search and recovery efforts will continue to locate the latest victim and gather information for investigators to help determine the cause of the disaster.
