What an exhilarating game we had last Monday between the Baltimore Ravens and the Las Vegas Raiders. Jon Gruden and his company may have upset Lamar Jackson’s team in overtime, but we the viewers were the real winners.
Moving on to Week 2 in the NFL, we have the gift of Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions facing Aaron Rodgers in Lambeau after a 38-3 loss to the New Orleans Saints. The Packers are the home favorites with 11.5 points so it might not be the MNF football game we want, but it’s the game we get. Let’s look at the player accessories to add some excitement.
Accessory # 1: Aaron Rodgers spends the longest over 38.5 (-120)
Last year, the Lions were in the bottom five in passing and running defense. In their 41-33 loss to the San Francisco 49ers last week, Detroit allowed 442 total yards, including 311 passing yards. One of those passing plays was a 79-yard touchdown from Jimmy Garoppolo to Deebo Samuel.
Rodgers may have threw two interceptions in the Packers’ 38-3 loss to the New Orleans Saints. However, it was on the road and now he’s playing Lambeau. In eight home games last season, Rodgers hit OVER 38.5 in five games and in six of eight home games in 2019. Rodgers’ longball average has been 66 yards or more each season since 2007.
Accessory # 2: Green Bay Packers first touchdown scorer, Davante Adams (+325)
In eight home games last year, Davante Adams was the first goalscorer in four. The Lions’ first score last week was a touchdown pass from rookie quarterback Trey Lance. With Rodgers back home, he’ll turn to his binkie in Adams for some momentum. Adams’ price for a score at any time is -175. He’s worth the risk of being bought out as the first Packers player to score.
Accessory # 3: TJ Hockenson OVER 55.5 receiving yards (-115)
The Lions don’t have a strong body of wide receivers. Instead, Goff turned to his running backs and tight end to take the receiving load.
In Week 1, TE TJ Hockenson was second on targets and led for receiving yards with a total of 97 plus one score. While this is only a one-game sample, a repeat could be in store in Week 2 against a Packers defense that allowed five touchdown passes last week.
Prop # 4: Jamaal Williams OVER 58.5 rushing yards + receiving (-115)
The Packers are favorites with 11.5 points, assuming the Lions will play from behind for all four quarters. Sticking to the same logic that the Lions lack a solid receiving pool, Williams stepped up to play the role last week, catching eight of nine targets for 56 receiving yards in addition to his 54 rushing yards.
Sharing the role with D’Andre Swift could come into play, but with a lack of weapons, Swift, Hockenson, and Williams could become the option trio on a weekly basis.
It’s easy to focus on Rodgers and company, but I think the Lions will be more competitive than the line suggests.
