After opening nearly $ 100 million of Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings, the Walt Disney Company has just made a major statement on the future of its films. First, all cthe remaining 2021 versions of the company, including Eternals and The king’s man, will only play in theaters for 45 days. Plus, the company just released a bunch of future films through 2024.
The biggest chunk of this latest news is that the 2024 schedule just added four new Marvel movies, slated for release on February 16, May 3, July 26, and November 8, 2024. They will come after four Marvel films. in 2022 and a whopping five in 2023. Beyond that, the last of Guillermo del Toro, Alley of nightmares, was postponed for a few weeks from December 3 to 17; previously undated Bob’s burgers movie will now be released on May 27, 2022; and the live version of The little MermaidD will swim in theaters on May 26, 2023.
Both movements are strong indications of how optimistic Disney is about the theatrical experience. And why shouldn’t he be? After releasing several of his big films of 2021 like Black Widow and Jungle cruise both in theaters and on Disney +, the last two major releases—free guy and Shang-Chi– were exclusively in theaters and both were major hits. Thus, the films remaining this year being exclusive to theaters for 45 days (with the notable exception of the animated film Charm, which will only be exclusive for 30 days) makes perfect sense, at least for the company. It might make less sense for people still concerned about the global covid-19 pandemic, but with the numbers Shang-Chi set up, Disney seems to be content with at least that potential.
It is also always worth checking whether the Disney program has always Avatar 2 in theaters in December 2022, what he does. Star wars will always return to the cinema in December 2023 with Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron, followed by the franchises which switch this month in 2028: Avatar 3 in December 2024, a new Star wars in December 2025, then Avatar, Star Wars, Avatar.
