4 shots at a party held in front of the library of the university center

Four students were injured in a shootout at a neighborhood party Tuesday night in front of a library at the Atlanta University Center.

Female students, who, according to the police, are between 17 and 19 years old, were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from grazing wounds to gunshot wounds. They were hit when two groups started firing in front of the Robert W. Woodruff Library on James P. Brawley Drive.

"It seems like there were two separate groups that were targeting each other and that these people had just been caught in the crossfire," said Captain William Ricker, of the Atlanta Police Department, at Channel 2 Action News.

According to the news channel, two of the injured students are from Spelman College and two from Clark Atlanta University. One woman was touched in the chest and another in the leg.

Their conditions are unknown Wednesday morning.

The evening marked the end of the new student orientation and the start of classes on Wednesday, Channel 2 announced. The shots around 10:30 pm drew a major police response from the Clark Atlanta Public Security Department. and the Atlanta Police.

"We heard a lot of gunshots and everyone started running," a Morehouse College junior who did not want to be identified told the television channel. "There was just a lot of confusion in the area."

Clark Atlanta Police Chief Debra Williams asked students to stay away from the library overnight while an investigation was underway. Officers visited the area and talked to witnesses.

"It's ridiculous to have someone come in here and start turning things around when you're just trying to have fun," said sophomore sophomore Alexis Carter.

It is unclear if the shooters are also students from the Atlanta University Center, which includes Morehouse and Spelman colleges and Clark Atlanta University.

A prayer vigil is scheduled for Wednesday noon on the boardwalk, a brick walkway that passes in front of the library and continues on the campus of Clark Atlanta.

"The evil will not happen on our campus," said the office of religious life at Clark Atlanta University in a message posted on Instagram, announcing the details of the vigil.
