New Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes had his introductory press conference on Tuesday and it was one of the most interesting and enjoyable introductory presses we’ve had here in Detroit. Lions fans should know, they’ve seen a few of them over the years. There were a lot of things that stood out, here are our four main things that stood out to us.
Holmes is a very passionate man
Some might see this and read “passion” as a guy who likes to scream a lot or gets angry easily. What I mean by that is that Brad Holmes showed on Tuesday that his belief in things runs deep. From a football standpoint, he explained how he skipped school to watch the 1993 NFL Draft and how it made him become a scout. He has spoken a lot about the importance of football to him and how it is something that is part of his family.
Speaking of family, it was crystal clear that Holmes is a family man, and you get the feeling that his upbringing was that of a family that believed in hard work and love. Holmes just has a very warm disposition. I know that doesn’t mean anything when it comes to building a team, but you can’t help but feel happy listening to a guy.
Holmes also spoke about the importance of being a black man in this position. He admired Ozzie Newsome growing up and hopes that one day people will love him. Passion just oozes this guy.
The front office is going to be a committee
No one has actually said that. It’s all reading tea leaves. Holmes explained how The Sneads and Rams don’t limit their scouting department members to titles and everyone works cohesively as a team. You have a feeling that will happen in Detroit as well.
There was a clear hierarchy in Detroit under Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia. This has led to rumors of infighting and disagreements over who to write and sign. Under Holmes, it looks like the Lions will be running things as a unit instead of a single guy running the show.
You can see this from the way Holmes said things like, “There will be no ego in the process. Everything is in the team. ”
It seems Holmes is planning to start a Scouting group that doesn’t want to take credit for successes and just want to have those successes as a unit. This is a full 180 from the previous Lions diet, and it’s something that must be excited about if you’re a Lions fan.
There are still questions about Stafford and the current roster
I know everyone wants to know what’s going on with Matthew Stafford. It was hard to say what the Lions’ exact quarterback decision will be this offseason. While Holmes mentioned that he thinks Matthew Stafford is very talented and that his intangibles are shown on video, he also said they should still assess the entire roster before making any decisions.
As for the rest of the list, Holmes mentioned that he doesn’t see this as long-term rebuilding. Putting a length of time on it isn’t the state of mind they’re going into. In fact, he seems to dislike the word “rebuild” and prefers to “reorganize” instead. This suggests that the Lions aren’t going to tear everything down to start a full rebuild under Holmes.
Although he said he was “very well versed” in the 2021 draft class and mentioned how the team will build through the draft. So we didn’t necessarily come back with a bunch of burning questions answered, but at least we came away knowing that there will be a lot of evaluations going on.
Not a self-made man
So really stuck. Holmes said he was not a big fan of the term “self made”. If you needed an example of the small size of this man’s ego, there you go. This is what the Lions talked about so much before this hire. The Lions were looking for someone who could work well with others and focus on the team rather than themselves. They wanted someone they could let do their job, but also someone who was open to hearing from others and who knew you couldn’t do it alone. It sounds like Brad Holmes in a nutshell.
When you hear Rod Wood, Sheila Ford Hamp, and Chris Spielman talk about these kinds of traits and then see a candidate displaying those traits, it really reaffirms that the Lions did their due diligence and in fact found the candidate that they think they are. , was the correct one. work and match their image of what that post in Detroit should be like.
