The boy is in good condition and should be released from Rady's children's hospital, said spokesman Carlos Delgado.

The attack occurred Monday afternoon as the boy and his family walked in a group along the Los Penasquitos Canyon Nature Reserve trail with 10 other people. The boy, Scott Bringman, said at a press conference that his son had been injured in the head.

The boy's injuries are not life-threatening, Bringman added. It has not been identified.

When the mountain lion attacked, everyone scattered, with the exception of the boy's father, who started throwing stones to scare the mountain lion, said Bringman.

During their investigation, Fish and Wildlife agents first saw animal prints and later at night, spotted the animal. Bringman said the guards thought it was the same animal that had attacked the boy because he did not seem to be afraid of the guards.

The mountain lion woman has been euthanized and will be tested for the victim's DNA. The child's clothing and bandages will also be tested for the mountain lion's DNA, and results should be available in a few days.

The park is closed until investigators can confirm that it is the same mountain lion.

Bringman said the last mountain lion attack in San Diego County was over 20 years ago.
