49ers announce several compositional changes

Mayo (6-2, 245) was originally selected in the fifth round (169th overall) of the 2015 NFL draft by the Carolina Panthers. In the last four seasons (2015-18) with Carolina, he has appeared in 59 games (four starts) and has recorded 34 tackles and a defensive pass in defense to complete 32 tackles for the special teams. He also competed in four playoff competitions with Carolina. In 2018, Mayo participated in 16 games (three starts) and finished with nine tackles and two special tackles.

A native of Scappoose, OR, 25, Mayo spent three seasons (2012-14) at Texas State University after a year (2011) at Santa Monica (CA) College. With the Bobcats, he played 29 games (28 starts) during which he scored 284 tackles, 10 defeat tackles, seven defensive passes, four interceptions, three forced fumbles, 2.5 sacks and two chip recoveries. In 2015, Verrett was selected for the Pro Bowl after 14 games (13 starts) and finished with career highs in tackles (47), defensive passes (11), interceptions (three) and the first interception has returned for a touchdown in his career.
