Today, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters via conference call. His team just lost 28-21 to the Seattle Seahawks and are down to 2-2 this season. Shanahan provided several injury updates from the match.

The most talked about injury was that of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who couldn’t start the second half, giving way to rookie Trey Lance.

Shanahan said Garoppolo suffered a calf contusion and would be reassessed on Wednesday. However, the coach believes there is still a chance that Garoppolo will be available for this weekend’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Shanahan also provided the following other injury updates.

  • Kicker Robbie Gould will be missing for some time with a strained groin. The injured reserve is an option. The coach reckons his kicker could be out for three to five weeks.
  • Tackle Trent Williams is day to day with a shoulder injury.
  • Defensive end Samson Ebukam suffers from hamstring pain.
  • Defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw is on a daily basis due to his knee injury.
  • Tight end George Kittle suffers from calf pain daily.

Shanahan said the injury news for Williams was good, given the gravity of the situation on Sunday.

“This is probably one of the best news we’ve had, considering what worried us initially,” said Shanahan. “There’s liquid in there and all that, so there are issues with that, but it’s something that he can hopefully get back here before Sunday.”

Shanahan added that running back Elijah Mitchell should be able to train on Wednesday without the contactless blue jersey. The recruit suffers from a shoulder injury sustained in week 2.

“It would be huge to get him back,” said Shanahan, “and hopefully he will feel better this week. It will be nice to see him do reps without the blue jersey.”
