49ers news: Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a calf contusion and will be reassessed on Wednesday

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffered a calf contusion on Sunday and would be reassessed on Wednesday. However, Shanahan wouldn’t rule Garoppoloo for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals, which is great news for Jimmy.

Garoppolo is out of Sunday’s wound, and the hope is that if he improves, he could play Arizona by Wednesday. Jimmy is day to day. I wonder if part of that makes the Cardinals prepare for two quarterbacks – although I would prepare for Lance if I were the Cardinals.

Left tackle Trent Williams is on a day-to-day basis with a shoulder injury. The same goes for George Kittle (calf injury) and Javon Kinlaw (calf injury). Samson Ebukam has hamstring pain just like everyday. Shanahan seemed more optimistic that this group would return to training on Wednesday and play next Sunday.

There was good news on the injury front for the running backs as Shanahan said Elijah Mitchell (shoulder) should be able to train on Wednesday without a contactless blue jersey. Mitchell, like everyone else on the list, will be evaluated during practice on Wednesday.

Shanahan said it was “definitely better news today than the feeling we had last night.” It’s a huge sigh of relief knowing that your quarterback and left tackle won’t miss extended action.

Shanahan said the 49ers didn’t “have to” make a return kick change – although he did in the game – after Trenton Cannon had a “really bad” fumble. Shanahan said the team needed more competition in the comeback position. Deebo Samuel took Cannon’s place. Maybe Mitchell or Ambry Thomas will kick back.

Kicker Robbie Gould has a strained groin. He’s going to run out of time a little. The 49ers will bring a new kicker this week. If San Francisco is to put Gould on the injured reserve, Gould must miss three games, not just weeks. Shanahan said Gould’s injury could last for 3-5 weeks. The team has yet to decide whether to place Gould on IR.

Over the past two seasons, the 49ers have brought in kickers Chase McLaughlin and Tristan Vizcaino when Robbie Gould was injured. Neither is an option this time around. McLaughlin is with the Browns. Vizcaino is with the Chargers.

Overall, the 49ers did pretty well on Sunday, considering the fact. We’ll see who trains on Wednesday, and we’ll get more updates from Shanahan in a few days.
