Trey Lance’s physical traits have never been in doubt. His ability to run and throw all the shots was apparent on his college tape as he dominated at the FCS level for North Dakota State. Question marks came over how he would adjust to the NFL after starting just 17 college games. We’ll have to wait and see how he plays at the speed of an NFL game, but his mental sharpness puts him in a good place to tie his physical traits to his high football IQ to quickly become the player the 49ers want him to be. ‘it be.
Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel provided a glimpse of how Lance was doing off the pitch as his exploits on the pitch were evident.
“There is an element of trust that is unique. I wouldn’t call it loud or loud. He has a calm, confident booty that I think players really like, ”McDaniel told reporters on Wednesday. “He knows the pressure on him, like any other player. So he’s really very comfortable in his skin I would say. And he gets to the point where he can correct other players, which from a coach’s perspective is all you’re looking for. You want a coach on the pitch. The person a catcher will listen to, much more than a coach, is the one who throws the ball to him. So he’s been really good with it and I think a lot of guys react to that.
Getting his teammates to stick with him is a big hurdle that Lance seems to already be breaking through. There’s a big difference between knowing what to do and being able to do it against an NFL defense, but given the benchmarks available at training camp, Lance seems to be on the right track.
McDaniel has confirmed that Lance is still not perfect, but he is advancing as they planned when they selected him.
“Well that’s a work in progress, that’s what you would do, if you’re doing something that’s really that hard you probably shouldn’t be the elite right off the bat,” McDaniel said. “So that’s one of the reasons why we have to represent so much, represent all the pieces so much, it’s because it’s not easy. So he’s where we’d like them in terms of development, some games are good, some are bad, but we try to focus on the bad ones, so there may be more good ones.
While McDaniel was generally more complimentary of Lance than head coach Kyle Shanahan, the overall theme is the same. Lance has all the tools, but it takes a ton of polish to supplant a veteran starting quarterback. The good news is that Lance appears to have all the tangible and intangible tools to be great, and that’s all the 49ers need from him whether he’s on the pitch in 2021 or 2022.
