Solomon Thomas is in the trading block, while the San Francisco 49ers seem ready to go from third place pick in the 2017 NFL draft.
Rumors that Thomas may be on the move came just hours before the start of the NFL 2019 draft, which means the 49ers need to be confident enough to come up with a replacement for him. Nick Bosa would be the bright guess, as the 49ers have the second pick in the repechage and he should be available.
A 23-year-old defensive lineman, Thomas has played 30 games in his two seasons in the NFL. At that time, he only accumulated four sacks from his defensive final position. He was solid against the race, but did not generate any pressure on the quarterback.
Thomas probably misread Robert Saleh's 4-73 defense in San Francisco. He is probably a defensive back 3-4 or, if he loses weight, he could advance as a defender 3-4. He certainly has a ton of talent, but just does not fit the 49ers.
Someone will have a very good player at Thomas and will probably pay a few cents on the dollar since the 49ers are forced to move him.
