49ers Quarterback Rumors: Are the Niners willing to pay too much to get a QB franchise?

Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians has just coached his team to a Super Bowl title under the mantra: “No risk, no cookie.” If the 49ers want to take a step as a quarterback, do they have to follow a similar philosophy? On today’s Niners Nation Shanaplan podcast, Akash Anavarathan questioned whether Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch had the … onions … for such a deal.

“When you trade for a quarterback, and one of those veteran quarterbacks is available, it must hurt … There must be some pain associated with that because there is no free lunch when you get a franchise quarterback. There is some risk associated with this, and the 49ers are very risk averse in my opinion. They do these low risk, value trades where if that player doesn’t perform or whatever, it doesn’t hurt as much because of the capital project that went with it. They’re on all of these guys, but once they realize the risk is too high, they take a little profit. When it comes to the quarterback position, you can’t be that way. There are enough teams that want the player you do, so you have to do something that hurts a little bit to get that player.

Akash went on to point out that the Jimmy Garoppolo, Trent Williams, and Dee Ford deals were all value deals that weren’t associated with a ton of risk. In order to get a franchise type quarterback on the open market, the 49ers won’t be able to make the kind of deal.

The question then becomes: Do Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have the stomachs to pull the trigger on a deal for someone, even if they have to pay too much to do it? Are they willing to go against their values-driven process to find the man they want?
