Among the many questions people have wondered about since the draft order went official is whether the 49ers would trade to get the coveted “Franchise Quarterback.” There have been good arguments on both sides of this question, but there is something else to ask: what if the 49ers didn’t have to trade to get a quarterback in April?
On today’s Niner Nate-tion podcast, Nate Nelson and Leo Luna took the plunge and made the top 12 picks in a so-called dream simulation project for the 49ers. It wasn’t a fantasyland simulation where every team in front of the 49ers goes mad and passes to Trevor Lawrence, just one of millions of possible scenarios that leaves a quarterback available after the top 11 picks.
If so, what would Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch do? Almost every front office member who has spoken publicly about the draft has mentioned how important it is to replenish the squad with cheap young talent for the future of the franchise. That would seem to rule out swapping for someone they loved, but what if he ran into you? Do Kyle and John take the plunge and make the choice, or are they looking to take advantage of a needy QB squad trying to make a splash? Further still, what if they stay where they are and just pass a quarterback?
It would probably be the end of 49ers Twitter, not that Lynch or Shanahan cares a lot about things like that.
So much about the team’s true intentions remains unknown, and frankly, we’ll probably never really know for sure what their ideal scenario would be. Still, I think it’s fun to think about it, and that’s what today’s show did for me.
