According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the San Francisco 49ers have restructured the Weston Richburg center contract, creating $ 6.875 million in salary cap space. Rapoport adds that the veteran offensive lineman is likely to retire.

The move gives the 49ers nearly $ 32 million in salary cap space, according to OverTheCap.com. Of course, that doesn’t end in the two-year, $ 10.1 million deal recently struck by cornerback Emmanuel Moseley, as the structure of that contract is not yet known.

San Francisco initially signed Richburg on a five-year, $ 47.5 million contract on March 14, 2018, and he started 15 games in his first season with the team. The center suffered a torn patellar tendon in Week 14 of the 2019 season, landed on the injured reserve and missed the home stretch of the 49ers Super Bowl race.

Richburg started the 2020 season on the reserve / physically unable to perform roster and has not appeared in a game. He has had several surgeries since the injury. In addition to undergoing knee surgery, he underwent shoulder surgery, which was credited for his setback in 2020. Most recently, he had hip surgery.

This is the second time the 49ers have restructured the Richburg contract to create a salary cap space. The team did it before in December 2019.
