On Saturday morning, the 49ers opened the doors of Levi’s Stadium to fans for the first time since the NFC Championship game in January 2020. With thousands of players on hand, the 49ers had a fairly normal training day, with a little flair. added to satisfy rabid fans who were watching their beloved team live for the first time in 18 months.
It was business as usual for the most part, so I’m going to break down what I saw at Levi’s and what stands out from my notes.
QUARTERS
I thought it was a pretty mundane performance by Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance. Each had a few throws that sent a jerk through the crowd, and both had a few, I’m sure they wish they could pick up.
Trey Lance – Lance’s climax came in a one-on-one session when he threw a ball 45 yards deep into the arms of wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who stepped on the cornerback rookie Deommodore Lenoir. The ball couldn’t have been placed better and the room itself was a microcosm of the untapped talent oozing from Lance.
Lance also added an impressive throw to Aiyuk for 11-11, hitting him in the middle but placing the ball over his back shoulder to prevent the safety from crashing outside Aiyuk.
On the flip side, some of Lance’s accuracy issues continued to arise as well, as he missed a few high and far misfires, including a bullet he passed over a receiver deep in the side. right that should have been intercepted by security providing overhead help.
Jimmy Garoppolo – For the most part, Garoppolo had a pretty solid 11-on-11 day, including a George Kittle touchdown on the goal line and a well-placed pitch between Deebo Samuel’s hashes.
The problem was when he missed; he was still low and behind the receiver, including a miss from Samuel that allowed Jason Verrett to break a possible walk-in touchdown. This issue has plagued Garoppolo for years now, and ultimately it might be unreasonable to expect that to change anytime soon as he enters his eighth season in the NFL.
On a positive note, Garoppolo showed good timing with the attack, and his caucus mastery seems stronger than ever.
OTHER OFFENSIVE PLAYERS
Brandon Aiyuk – Two words: Catch Radius. Aiyuk continues to show off during training camp, showcasing his insanely large wingspan as he snatches balls high in the air. Aiyuk has always been one of the best players on the field during training camp, and he’s looking to take a leap forward in his second season in the NFL.
George Kittle – After a semi-calm start to training camp, Kittle has been on fire lately, becoming a dominant force in the last two practices. The highlight of his day came on a rep from the goal line where he absolutely roughed Lenoir on the line of scrimmage before catching a touchdown pass from Garoppolo.
Kittle looked like he was feeding off the energy of the crowd, as he behaved with a bit more of the electric enthusiasm that we’ve grown accustomed to seeing from the pros.
DEFENSE
Maurice Hurst – What a pickup it was for the 49ers. Hurst absolutely dominated the second and third team’s offensive lines for 11-11 and was a reminder to many how deep the 49ers’ defensive line is with a performance that you’d think he could start in the majority of the teams in the NFL.
Hurst is emerging as a roster lock in a crowded group of positions, and his immense talent and skills will go a long way in an already stacked group of positions.
Jonas Griffith – A player who stood out for me from day one of camp, Griffith continued to raise his stock with an outstanding 11v11 performance. Griffith was all over the pitch, displaying tremendous lateral speed for himself. associate with more football IQ, constantly putting yourself in the right place to make games.
Griffith also got reps with the first team, joining Dre Greenlaw and Fred Warner in the 4-3 base group. If this play continues, Griffith will likely take that 4th or 5th linebacker and retain a prominent role in special teams going forward.
Tavon Wilson – Another player who goes unnoticed, Wilson appears to be a savvy veteran who understands where he needs to be and, as a result, rarely makes mistakes that put him out of position.
While Jaquiski Tartt is expected to miss the start of the season on the PUP roster, Wilson has more than gained an important role in that defense, seemingly bolstering his starting security spot against Jimmie Ward.
