All eyes will be on the 49ers’ quarterbacks tonight, but a handful of other players are on the roster bubble and can help their stock in tonight’s preseason game against the Chargers.
Here are four players to watch tonight.
WR / KR Nsimba Webster
Ty Austin wrote a great article that sheds light on who Webster is. The returning man who replaces the kick returner made a name for himself in Week 1 against the Chiefs with some explosive plays.
Preseason is all about taking advantage of your opportunity, and Webster did it precisely when the Niners offense called its number. Webster probably won’t play until the second half, but if he can have another solid performance, Webster could claim the sixth and final wide receiver spot for the 49ers.
Right now, these five feel like locks to make the list:
- Brandon Aïyuk
- Deebo Samuel
- Mohamed sanu
- Jauan Jennings
- Trent Sherfield
After that, there was no consistent wide receiver. Webster offers special teams value as both a returner and a shooter. If he can turn out to be more than a gadget player, he stands a chance. If Deebo Samuel is away for an extended period, Webster’s chances of growing the list increase even more.
S Ha Ha Clinton-Dix
Everyone loves a new face. During joint practices, Clinton-Dix didn’t necessarily stand out, but he didn’t do anything wrong. Clinton-Dix did his job. That’s all San Francisco needs the veteran to do.
When the defense is at its best, they fly up front and the secondary tackles in free field and limits the big game. However, if the Chargers’ offensive tackles don’t dress up, the night could be long. for their quarters.
As Demmodore Lenior did last week, defensive backs have to be opportunistic. Clinton-Dix played with the ball in his first two practices. The former Pro Bowler will play on the roster himself if he does the same during the game.
RB Trey sermon
Sermon had a forgettable first performance as he averaged less than three yards per carry and fumbled. I would expect Sermon to perform a lot better and more involved in the passing game with Jimmy Garoppolo.
I’m curious to see how many reps Sermon receives and if that leads to 1v1 reps as a pass blocker. The 49ers have yet to find their third down and Sermon could take the job with a big day.
Sermon’s success in the field is not entirely in his control. I don’t blame him for last week’s performance as the offensive line failed to generate a resemblance with a push. This may still be the case this evening. Keep an eye out for Sermon, and if he finds any folds to reduce his runs. If so, expect a big night out.
EDGE Samson Ebukam
Last season with the Rams, Ebukam generated 19 presses, including five sacks on 173 rushed passes. Ebukam had a field day in Thursday’s joint practice including a pair of sacks with the starters.
NickBosa won’t be dressing tonight. I’m not sure Dee Ford has an interest in playing. This means Ebukam and Arden Key will take the lead on obvious transmissions.
Ebukam covers an embarrassing amount of ground in its first steps. But, combine that with athletics to get around the problem, and you have the ultimate wild card. Ebukam is still in the rough as a passer, but whether it’s winning on the edge or curling in the middle, he’s shown he has a knack for getting into the backfield.
