49ers watch free agent Carlos Dunlap when Seahawks release him

The 49ers won’t spend much on free agency despite having a healthier cap situation than it seemed at the end of the season. However, some mid-level free agents might end up being available at a reduced rate with so many teams against the lowered salary cap this offseason. Any free agent defensive end that won’t break the bank should be on the 49ers’ radar, which is why the DE Carlos Dunlap’s imminent release by Seahawks should interest them.

Dunlap just finished his 11th season in the NFL with an eight-game stint in Seattle after Cincinnati Bengal gave him to the Seahawks mid-season. The 32-year-old was a second-round pick for the Bengals in 2010, and he’s been a force on their defensive front for more than 10 years. He won two Pro Bowl nods and racked up 82.5 sacks for Cincinnati, including a career-best 13.5 in 2016.

While he will likely never reach Pro Bowl level play again, Dunlap was effective for the Seahawks last season. He scored 5.0 sacks in eight games.

At 6-6, 285 pounds, Dunlap can rush the passer from the edge and kick inside and rush from there as well. He may not be a player at all levels at this point in his career, but if the 49ers can add him as a situational pass passer who can turn in multiple places on the defensive front, they could start to build a deep defensive line like the one they rode in the Super Bowl two seasons ago.
