Today, at Gamescom, Dell has officially launched its new flagship OLED gaming monitor, the Alienware 55. First introduced to Computex, the screen uses a 4K OLED panel with a 120 Hz refresh rate, making it one of the fastest 4K monitors available. Alienware 55 supports AMD's FreeSync variable refresh rate technology, which differentiates the monitor from OLED UHD TVs, but not from its HDR implementation.
The Alienware 55 is based on a 55-inch OLED panel offering a resolution of 3840×2160, a maximum brightness of 400 nits, a contrast ratio of 130,000: 1, a gray-to-gray response time of 0.5 ms as well as a maximum refresh rate of 120 Hz. The display can reproduce 98.5% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, which is comparable to the precision of professional LCD displays. The monitor is also equipped with an anti-reflective coating with a hardness of 2H for clarity when used on a clear day.
The main feature set of the Alienware 55 is a combination of technology and size. OLED computer screens are rare in general and it is the first OLED monitor in the sector for gamers. The product is not without warning: despite the use of OLED technology, it is not an HDR monitor. In fact, Dell says nothing about the 55-inch Alienware that supports HDR10 or Dolby Vision transport; therefore, no matter what the panel can do, it seems that the monitor itself does not support any HDR input format.

The Alienware 55 comes with three HDMI 2.0 inputs as well as a DisplayPort 1.2 connector, the latter being the second particularity of today 's announcement.
