The MCU is often told how the studio could build such a massive connected universe, while Rockstar Games has done the same with GTA.

The GTA franchise, in many ways, represents the best of the AAA gaming industry in terms of quality, scale, and value. One of the franchise’s greatest accomplishments has been telling individual, independent stories while being able to tie them all together.

This means that each game takes place in the same universe and the characters appear in multiple games. Depending on the timeline, the characters are often younger or older than when they first appeared.

5 characters in GTA 5 who appeared in previous games of the franchise

5) Johnny Klebitz

In perhaps what has become one of the most iconic character introductions to a video game, Johnny Klebitz from GTA IV: The Lost and Damned meets his rather unhappy and brutal end. While this is by no means a straight arrow during the GTA IV expansion, Johnny really finds himself off the rails during the events of Grand Theft Auto.

Johnny is nothing more than a shell of the man he was and finds himself at the mercy of his addictions. After having an altercation with Trevor, the character is brutally buried in the ground.

4) Michelle / Karen

One of the biggest deviations Rockstar Games pulled in GTA IV is the revelation that Michelle, real name Karen, was indeed an undercover IAA agent. The reveal ends with Niko and Karen breaking up, and she was not seen for the remainder of the match.

However, during the mission “By the Book” in GTA 5, she appears as the agent interrogating Mr. K and threatening him with a flashlight. A cameo adds weight to a connected universe.

3) Patrick “Packie” McReary

Perhaps one of the best missions in GTA history, Grand Theft Auto IV’s “Three-Leaf Clover” laid the foundation for the Heist system in Grand Theft Auto V. game is Packie McCreary.

During a random event in GTA 5, it appears where the player meets two men who are setting up a pharmacy. The player can then choose to take them to a safe place. He will become available as Gunman for Heists in the game, which is good.

2) Rocco Pelosi

Originally appearing in the franchise as one of GTA IV’s main villains, Rocco Pelosi is an endlessly boring and contemptible character. So when he’s knocked into oblivion by Michael’s hands in GTA 5, it feels all the more satisfying.

He appeared in the game as a talented agent trying to hijack actor and director Richard Solomon. Michael foils his plans with the aforementioned punches and returns the talent to Richard.

1) Lazlow

By the number of appearances credited alone, Lazlow has likely appeared several times throughout the franchise. Originally only appearing as a radio host, Lazlow appears as a fictional version of himself in GTA 5. He is the host of the infamous reality TV show Fame or Shame.

His appearance in the game was extremely shocked as he played an extremely over-the-top version of himself. Apart from his performance, Lazlow had also been involved in the GTA GTA creation process regarding writing.

He would also continue to work on Red Dead Redemption 2 as an audio writer and director.
