Five children and an adult were killed in what is believed to be a morning shootout Tuesday that ended with a relative of the victims in custody, authorities in eastern Oklahoma said.
Police responded to a call at 1.30am from several people shot dead at a residence in southeast Muskogee, and when officers arrived, a suspect emerged brandishing a gun, officials said.
A policeman fired a bullet and missed the suspect, who was later apprehended after a short chase, police said. The suspect is linked to the victims, Muskogee Police Chief Johnny Teehee told NBC News.
Inside the residence, police found four deceased children and one deceased adult.
“A fifth child later died after being taken on the run to a hospital in Tulsa,” police said in a statement. “There was also a fatally injured adult woman in a hospital in Tulsa.”
Muskogee is approximately 50 miles southeast of Tulsa.
