After three straight weeks of increasing coronavirus cases in New Jersey’s 21 counties, there has been some positive news this week.
Five counties recorded fewer new COVID-19 infections from November 19 to 25 than the week before. The declines occurred in Cape May, Essex, Middlesex, Salem and Somerset counties.

Cases in Somerset County fell 12%, the state’s largest week-over-week drop. Salem County recorded a 9% drop. Cape May fell 7% and also had the state’s lowest overall new case rate – 17.2 more infections per 10,000 population.
The counties of Essex and Middlesex, meanwhile, both fell by about 2%.
Still, cases statewide remain on the rise, increasing 9% from last week. However, this was a significant flattening of the curve from the 43% increase in new cases seen a week ago.
Overall, New Jersey added 29.3 cases per 10,000 people. This means that about one in 341 people statewide has tested positive for COVID-19 this week.

The highest rate again occurred in Passaic County, which added 50.2 new cases per 10,000 population. Two more – Camden and Burlington counties – both exceeded 40 new cases per 10,000, and six other counties had more than 30.
No day of the week November 19-25 saw fewer than 3,500 new cases in New Jersey. There were 4,679 new positive tests on November 21, the highest for a day for the state of the pandemic as a whole.
