Nostalgia is a dangerous thing, but the success of World of Warcraft Classic proves that people were right to mow the past. Blizzard's official vanilla servers evoke a time when MMOs were decidedly more challenging and fundamentally more social, making even a group of players and a dungeon feel like a great adventure. But it is not because Classic succeeds that modern extensions such as Battle for Azeroth sometimes fall that World of Warcraft has worsened with time.

World of Warcraft has evolved so much and changed that the classic and modern incarnation has almost the appearance of different games: apples, oranges, etc. But even though I have a lot of fun exploring Azeroth as it existed in 2006, there are a few things I miss in modern Warcraft.

Quests that do not bother me

If there is one area in which Classic Warcraft absolutely suffers, it's in the design of the quest. These jokes about killing 15 wild boars are not fun when you're at level 30 and you set a glove of boring and repetitive quests on the 100+ hours to reach the maximum level. And what is really distorted is that you feel fortunate When you have quests to do, the alternative of killing monsters for exp is even worse.

Although many players despise the Cataclysm extension for effectively erasing the original version of Azeroth, it offered a completely redone leveling experience that was much more enjoyable. The individual zones now have a central story that is told through many rhythmic quests in a more uniform way. Goals are more varied and often involve new tasks such as driving vehicles or fighting fun mini-bosses. Leveling a character is a lot more appealing, even if the end result makes me feel like I'm at an amusement park that trains me to different destinations.

Truly versatile classes

I like a lot the ideas that animate the different classes of Classic. Hunters, for example, have animals that need to be fed to stay happy and weapons at a distance that require me to stock ammunition. This may seem like a daunting task, but managing these resources helps to reinforce the hunter fantasy. What I do not like, though, is the simplification of some classes and the little versatility of most tasks beyond their primary role.

In modern WoW, each class has distinct specializations that change the abilities I have access to and sometimes the role I play in a group. Paladins, for example, can be healers, tanks, or dealers of damage. But in classical? You will probably be healing, although you can wear this awesome plate armor and swing a big hammer. Although Classic classes try to have some versatility, they are often terribly ill-equipped compared to others who specialize in the role you want to emulate. The result is that it becomes difficult to convince your party to let you drive like a druid when there is a volunteer warrior who can do it better.

Modern WoW, by comparison, considers each specialization almost as a separate class in itself, which means a more useful skill set that can be used more often. The scale, though not perfect (as any Improvement shaman says, allows you to experiment with different and equally valuable game styles.

Dungeon boss and raid better designed

Although Classic has nailed many things for the first time, nothing replaces the 15 years of practice in making good dungeons and raids. And one thing that has improved dramatically over the years is Blizzard's ability to make a fun fight against a boss. In World of Warcraft Classic, bosses often do not present many challenges beyond one or two special abilities and many life points. There is not always an elaborate strategy. you just run there and kill them as quickly as possible. That's why guilds were able to get off some of the first Classic raid bosses so quickly: things are just simpler in Classic.

Modern WoW leaders are not necessarily harder than their conventional counterparts, but the fight is usually more complex and requires each group member to know what he's doing. Instead of just holding aggro, tanks might need to interrupt some of the leader's abilities or trigger "active reduction" abilities at the right time to protect themselves from special attacks. And healers must always be aware of the special attacks they can dispel to save their allies.

WoW's modern dungeons and raids also have some pretty inventive obstacles to overcome.
