5 reactions to Odell Beckham Jr. vs. Browns, Dee Ford to Chiefs

I LOVE THIS LEAGUE OF FREAKING! Where do we begin? In the midst of a frenzy of rampant spending among teams with money to spend and holes to fill, the Giants traded Odell Beckham Jr. to the Browns and the Chiefs traded their star defenseman Dee Ford to Niners!

OK, let's start with the blockbuster deal. The Giants traded a wide-back superstar receiver in Cleveland against a 2019 first-round pick (17th overall), a 2019 third-round pick and Jabrill Peppers safety. (Btw, another player for the player trade! Yay.)

I mean, oh wow. Here is my reflex reaction to two big exchanges on Tuesday night.

1. John Freakin 'Dorsey is building a mastodon in Cleveland.

Pairing OBJ with buddy Jarvis Landry and young newcomer David Njoku, as well as the half-ball team (Nick Chubb, Duke Johnson, Kareem Hunt at one point) are more than enough for Baker Mayfield.

This is how you build a list of weapons for a young quarterback. The Browns have the cap and the choice of project to get there, and they did it. When you have an excellent young quarter on a rookie affair, you go there.

Add to that Olivier Vernon and the signature of Sheldon Richardson, and Dorsey was the winner of this off season.

I can not wait to watch the Browns this season. Yes, I wrote that.

2. The Giants race is not as bad as it seems, if they are in reconstruction mode.

"We did not hire Odell to negotiate it" – Dave Gettleman, General Manager, Giants

These are the last famous words of Gettleman. Rumors have been circulating since Jay Glazer spoke of a possible Odell Beckham trade earlier in the season. The brass giants tried to deny it, but they always seemed lukewarm. The Giants seemed to regret giving Beckham money almost immediately.

It was clear that Pat Shurmur and OBJ, the new coach of the Giants, had never had any synergy. It did not help Beckham to have missed out on last season and the offense could have worked without him.

That being said, this decision only makes sense if the Giants are rebuilding completely. And even then, I'm not sure I can justify it. Let's start with the package they received for Beckham.

Unlike most social media, I do not think it's the worst deal possible. Here's a secret: Most NFL franchises do not value large recipients like the general public does. We have seen important recipients like Brandin Cooks and Amari Cooper trade for first-round picks. The Browns traded against Jarvis Landry by dropping their fourth and seventh round picks, and the Raiders recently traded against Antonio Brown for third and fifth round picks (plus a new contract).

The Giants received the Browns' first round and a late third, which, if you wanted to be tough, was not the best third round of the Browns. The giants have also received security of departure with this trade. It's a beautiful race. I do not care about compensation.

3. Beckham gets a lot more reviews than he deserves.

However, this is the only good thing that can be said about this trade. If you've been following me for quite a long time, you know I think having a high-priced broad receiver on your list without the other essential parts of the list (QB, LT, pass rusher, CB) is a big no-no. The giants were in this situation. I normally agree with this agreement.

But Beckham breaks that rule, in my opinion. I saw him win the Giants games. He caught short passes and took them home for the final score. For all the grief he had for proposing to break the nets and hit the fans, he is worshiped in the locker room.

He works his ass, keeps the locker loose and brings his game A to the games. It is NOT a distraction.

So if the Giants had traded it because of it, it was unfounded.

How about money? The Giants recently had a massive contract with Beckham. That makes him the highest-paid NFL receiver with about $ 18 million a season. They paid him $ 21.5 million last season for the 12 matches in which he participated and spend $ 16 million on empty space.

Beckham did not even ask for an exchange and the Giants, for a high financial cost, moved him anyway.

4. The Giants do not really have a plan.

Others have argued that and that's the truth: the Giants are a team around a 38-year-old quarterback who has lost his productivity over the years. The Giants reinforced the offensive line and added Saquon Barkley to run behind. Sterling Shepard does not cry out to me first.

The Giants have no talent in defense. No hasty pass, slow linebackers and no one to defend the pass. What are they doing? What is the plan?

The Giants should have pressed the reset button last season. They could have signed OBJ, released Eli Manning and drafted Sam Darnold. Or do not sign OBJ. It does not matter. But Darnold project. He was there for the catch.

Instead, they wrote a running back. Now at No. 6, the Giants might be able to name Dwayne Haskins or maybe even Daniel Jones, who both have problems to solve. Darnold is better than both.

What is the best transport? Barkley and Jones, or Darnold, and some of them doing better this season? Clearly the last. So, tell me with skepticism that the giants have plans.

5. The exchanged heads Dee Ford is a headache.

The Chiefs, who are in desperate need of defense assistance, traded their rising star and best pass, Dee Ford, to the Niners in exchange for a second-round pick for 2020. Ford, previously on the No. franchise label, gets a substantial increase in his new team: five years and $ 87.5 million.

My love for chefs is known, so I can discuss it without bias. This trade does not make much sense. You badly need Ford. There is not a single reliable pass card on the list now that Ford has been traded and that Justin Houston has been cut. Who will precipitate the smuggler?

Yes, the leaders have upgraded safely with Tyrann Mathieu, but he can only defend the pass for a very long time. So far, the Chiefs have not done much to support the cornerback, but again, they have no pressure on the outside passes, which is critical to the success of the NFL. And, as leaders often win victories at the end of games, a hug is more valuable. Ford was a player they needed in 2019.

If you examine this trade on the side of the leaders, you will understand why they just tried to get everything they could for him after seeing the giants unleash Landon Collins for nothing. If no one wanted to give more and Ford was not in their long-term plans, then get rid of him. I understand that from a financial point of view, but not from a point of view on the ground.

Patrick Mahomes can not be extended now, so they do not need this money. Perhaps they plan to improve the Tyreek Hill contract soon and need money. We just feel that they could have made it work anyway.

Just a crazy night in the NFL. I'll be back on Wednesday for more – when free agency officially start.
