Actor "Empire" Jussie Smollett is under arrest and faces a charge of disorderly conduct for allegedly filing a false police report, Chicago police said. A bail hearing is scheduled for this afternoon. Smollett, who is black and homosexual, unleashed a firestorm three weeks ago when he told the police that two men had assaulted him in a racist and homophobic attack, with insults, MAGA hats, pouring a chemical on him and a noose around his neck. Police now think that Smollett paid for two brothers to orchestrate the assault on him, CNN reported two police sources. Smollett denies playing a role in his attack.

A historic summit on the scandal of abuse against the clergy of the Catholic Church begins today in Rome. Pope Francis called for the organization of a four-day summit, which will bring together for the first time in Catholic history nearly 200 church leaders to deal with the crisis. "We must face this monster without fear if we really want to conquer it," said a spokesman for the Vatican. The summit comes as the Catholic Church faces scandals on several fronts, ranging from the sexual abuse of nuns by the clergy to a new salacious book that appears today and which calls the Vatican "one of the largest gay communities in the world".

A Coast Guard officer is accused of wanting to commit a massacre. Christopher Paul Hasson was arrested last week for indicting drugs and firearms. The authorities claim that Hasson, of Maryland, is a white supremacist who has kept a blacklist that has appointed renowned democrats and members of the media, including CNN presenters. A search of his home found 15 weapons and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition. Prosecutors regard Hasson as a national terrorist and claim that it was based on the manifesto of Anders Breivik, the Norwegian man who killed 77 people in two 2011 terrorist attacks.

At the end of a teachers' strike, another begins on the other side of the country. Teachers in West Virginia ended their strike just two days after renouncing a law that would have created new charter schools and allowed the use of public funds for private lessons. They will be back in class today – when teachers from Oakland, California, leave their jobs. And their strike promises to be different from all the others. Oakland teachers live in one of the most expensive places in the United States – thanks to the technology boom – so they want a better salary. They claim a 12% increase over three years, but the school district said it was so short of money that it could only offer 5% increases over three years. So, this one could last a moment.
