5 things we learned on the first day of D23 – Variety

The first day of Disney's D23 Expo was marked by an endless presentation of Disney Plus that unveiled the new streaming platform.

With no less than six new series announced in the space of two hours, it is clear that Disney is not doing anything stupid when it comes to competing in the war continuously, we will not do it neither. Without further ado, here are five things to remember from the first day at the Anaheim Convention Center:

Bonanza Disney Plus content

Disney officials have started the much-anticipated Disney Plus panel by listing all the old classic Mouse House properties that will be available on the streamer from launch on November 12th. However, just put in one place all of Disney's vast library of old content is not going to cut mustard with sharks like Apple and WarnerMedia in the white waters. So what does Disney do in response? Take a closer look at their IP library to bring out subtle new programming. Think of a new "Lizzie McGuire" but she's 30, "The Muppets" but it's a short unscripted series, Star Wars, but it's a western-samurai series with "The Mandalorian", Obi-Wan Kenobi, but he … oh no wait it's still Ewan McGregor.

Spiderman Tags Out, Three New Heroes Tag In

Kevin Feige made the news this week for being caught in the Marvel-Sony niche that led to Spiderman's future in the MCU. However, during the presentation of Disney Plus, Feige seemed to be in a bullish mood, triggering his usual madness from Marvel's catchy ads. This time, it was the triple heckling of a "Mrs. Marvel", which features a US-Muslim superhero, "She Hulk", which means that Bruce Banner is present in the Hulk department and "Moon Knight", which definitely seems to be the least sighted and best known Marvel property. While the potential loss of Spiderman is definitely a blow to Marvel on the film's plan, Feige wanted to demonstrate that the content production center was determined to expand its box office dominance on the television side.

"WandaVision" is a sitcom?

After the three new series, we attended a parade of familiar faces of Marvel. Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan joked a bit for "Falcon and the Winter Soldier" without saying anything. Tom Hiddleston appeared on the giant screen for 30 seconds to greet and not reveal much of his new series "Loki". However, the most surprising revelation that emerges from the Marvel part of the Disney Plus presentation is undoubtedly the one that says "WandaVision" will be "a half-classic sitcom and a spectacular half-MCU". If that puzzles you, imagine how the reaction Paul Bettany and Elizabeth Olsen unveiled a clip for the series, which consisted essentially of old images of Scarlet Witch and Vision Cooking Goulash, etc. intertwined with clips from "The Dick Van Dyke Show". The film was shot in the 1950s, but it still seems a little exaggerated to juxtapose Dick Van Dyke with an all-powerful mutant and a … whatever the vision.

An adorable affair

Disney can play in front of a crowd. About half way through the Disney Plus presentation, while the ad parade seemed to be dragging a bit, they pulled out the dogs. The least we can say is that dog movies have always been mixed, but the Disney live action trailer "Lady and the Tramp" is all about beautiful. The revelation that all the canine comedians of the film were rescues only reinforced the "aww's" of the play. However, the fuzzy ears and wet nose aside, there are still some question marks about the film, mainly about how it will handle the redefinition of its ugly duo of cats and their stereotyped and downright racist portrayal in the original movie. The trailer may be adorable, but the success of "Lady and the Tramp" will depend on whether its bark barking is bigger than the bite.

"Dancing With the Stars" Foxtrots away from the controversy

One of the biggest Disney-related titles in D23 was the decision to involve Sean Spicer in the upcoming season of "Dancing With the Stars." After the tremendous online reaction, the D23 "DWTS" panel, which took place in front of hundreds of eager fans, seemed to be the perfect place for showrunner and executive producer Andrew Llinares. However, Llinares and the panel remained totally silent on the subject, aside from moderator Tom Bergeron who said "there was a little press" about the new season. That's nice Tom! Instead, the most difficult questions for Llinares and Bergeron were who your favorite Disney character was and who would you play if you could dance Disney night again? The silent response of the show on Friday was deafening.
