ADAK, Alaska – A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck near the Andreanof Islands in Alaska early Friday, just hours after a 5.5 magnitude earthquake was reported in the same region, the US Geological Survey reports.

Update at 8:10 a.m. EDT September 24: According to the agency, the second quake, which occurred shortly before 8 a.m. EDT Friday, was centered about 114 miles west-southwest of Adak at a depth of 24.6 miles.
Original report: A 5.5 magnitude earthquake struck near the Andreanof Islands in Alaska overnight, the US Geological Survey reports.
According to the agency, the quake, which occurred around 3 a.m. EDT Friday, was centered about 113 miles west-southwest of Adak at a depth of 23.6 miles. Officials have warned aftershocks could be underway.
No information on possible damage or injury was immediately available. The authorities have not issued any tsunami watches or warnings in the region.
