PASS GRANTS – Southern Oregon health officials said staff distributed six doses of the coronavirus vaccine to motorists at an “impromptu vaccination clinic” along a road in a snowstorm.

Josephine County Public Health said on Facebook that about 20 staff were stranded on US Highway 199 on Tuesday near Hayes Hill on their way to Grants Pass after hosting a vaccination event nearby .

The vaccines were about to expire and officials decided to offer them to other stranded motorists, officials said.

“The beneficiaries had been identified in Grants Pass, but the snow meant that these doses would not reach them before they expired,” the health department said.

Not wanting to waste any doses, staff started walking from car to car, offering people a chance to receive the vaccine, with a county ambulance on hand for safety, officials said.

All the doses were administered, including one to an employee of the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office who arrived too late for the vaccination clinic but ended up stopping with the others, officials said.

Mike Weber, director of public health for Josephine County, said it was one of the “coolest surgeries he’s been on.”
