The Pittsburgh Steelers trained again at Heinz Field on Sunday as they prepare for their next preseason game Thursday against the Philadelphia Eagles. Since Coach Tomlin spoke to reporters after practice, it’s time to watch the players mentioned by Coach Tomlin during his media time. Remember, these are current players for whom a specific question was asked during the question-and-answer period.
Rashaad Coward & Kevin Dotson
With goaltender Kevin Dotson starting Steelers training camp unable to participate due to injury, former Chicago Bears goaltender Rashaad Coward held the fort on the left side. Coach Tomlin was asked about his thoughts on Coward so far in training camp.
“I think he did a great job. He’s got the manners and demeanor of a veteran and that’s necessary, especially as we go through the transition that we go through in this group when we are missing guys or working in this group. His level of maturity and experience is evident and it is an asset for him and for us.
In a later question, coach Tomlin was asked about Kevin Dotson’s return to training on Sunday and his performance.
“I can’t tell you. I’ll watch the tape first. It was good to have him there again today.
The following question created some controversy throughout the nation of the Steelers. Coach Tomlin was asked if Kevin Dotson was running with the second team because of what he saw of Coward with the first team. Coach Tomlin answered the question about Dotson’s position after missing several weeks.
“He did nothing to gain first-team representatives. What are we talking about? He’s a second year guy who hadn’t worked.
Devin Bush and Najee Harris
While these two players weren’t grouped together for the original question, it made sense to put Devin Bush and Najee Harris in the same category based on the follow-up question and answer. First, Coach Tomlin was asked about Devin Bush’s condition so far in training camp.
“We’re doing well. Work hard, get better every day. Excited to get it back on the grass.
In a later question, coach Tom and was asked whether Devin Bush faced Najee Harris in drills and if they had been matched as much as he hoped.
“We just got there. And again, like I mentioned earlier on the opening, we’re starting to bring some of these guys back to full participation. And that’s a goal, it’s a competitive goal for him. And so, he had some of those opportunities yesterday and he will have more as we continue. It’s good for him and it’s good for 22 (Najee Harris) too.
Cam Heyward & Eric Ebron
Another player who grew up with Devin Bush was Steelers defensive captain Cam Heyward. Coach Tomlin was asked about Bush and Heyward’s relationship,
“Cam is talking; he is listening. This is the nature of their relationship.
Coach Tomlin was asked another question if Heyward has any “old guy tendencies” or if he’s just the old guy on that particular team.
“When he was young, we were hypothetically talking about a certain day when he would be this guy, when he admired guys like Aaron Smith and stuff like that. At that time, this point in his career seemed like just an eternity and a day. I just like to remind him he’s there.
Finally, approaching Eric Ebron, Coach Tomlin was asked if he keeps track of individual stats in exercise work. In his response, Coach Tomlin specifically referred to Eric Ebron.
“We keep track of it, but not in the way you suggest. It’s just a competitive spirit that we want to instill in them. Everyone knows what good reps or difficult reps are. Guys want to cover Ebron, for example, because he has strength in this area and so if you cover him you have the opportunity to cover him again. If you don’t, then you have to go down and cover someone else. In that sense, we score points competitively, but not everything we keep in the ledger. “
In the next question, Coach Tomlin was asked how Heyward is doing in the exercise.
“Cam loses a lot more than he wins. But he’s competitive, isn’t he?
Finally, Coach Tomlin was asked if Heyward was sneaking into the drill to specifically face Ebron or if the coaches fabricated the match.
“He’s always looking for competition. He thinks he’s an oversized athlete. Notice I said, ‘It thinks he’s an oversized athlete.
A replay of Mike Tomlin’s interview can be watched at the end of the Steelers training camp closing show below.
