Kansas City Chiefs will make their second straight Super Bowl appearance, thanks to their 38-24 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in the AFC Championship game, and a handful of Utah ties will try to win another ring when the Chiefs play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV.
Kansas City overcame a 9-0 deficit against Buffalo to advance to the NFL title game, as Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, pitched for 325 yards and three touchdowns in Sunday’s win.
Chiefs’ ties in Utah returned to Super Bowl
- Former BYU security Daniel Sorensen, who made six tackles in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory last year, was a Kansas City high school starter in his seventh professional season.
- Former Utah State running back Darwin thompson won a ring last season as a rookie. It was booked in its second year.
- Marcus Kemp, a former wide receiver Layton High, recently joined the Chiefs’ training squad. He was on the reserve injured last year when Kansas City won the title.
- Head Coach Andy reid, a former BYU lineman and graduate assistant, won his first Super Bowl title as a head coach last year. He is in his 22nd season as NFL head coach.
- Defensive Quality Control Coach Alex whittingham, a former Utah player and Utes coach Kyle Whittingham’s son is in his third season on Reid’s staff.
- Offensive quality control coach Porter Ellett, a BYU graduate from Loa, Utah, spent the previous three years as Reid’s senior assistant before taking on his current role this season.
The opponent: Tampa Bay
The Buccaneers, the Chiefs’ Super Bowl LV opponents on February 7 after Tampa Bay defeated Green Bay 31-26 in Sunday’s NFC Championship game, have no tie with Utah on their roster.
Tom Brady outscored Aaron Rodgers as the Buccaneers took a 28-10 lead before resisting a late Packers rally attempt. Tampa Bay becomes the first team to play in its home stadium for the Super Bowl.
