After years of steadily raising the price of its flagship products and pushing its high-end models, Samsung could finally take a step forward with the Galaxy S21 series. According to a report from Korea, the company is drastically lowering local prices for its next flagship line while betting on the most affordable candidate to lead the line.
AND News reports that Samsung is hoping the Galaxy S21 model will be its biggest seller. It will also pour most of its factory resources into the base model, allocating 60% of its production capacity to the cheaper S21 device. Samsung has also reportedly lowered the price of this model to 990,000 won (~ $ 909) – just down from the Galaxy S20 by 1.248 million won (~ $ 1,146).

This strategy of lowering prices will apparently continue for the rest of the series. The Galaxy S21 Plus will also be cheaper in South Korea than the Galaxy S20 Plus and cost 1.199 million won (~ $ 1,104) according to the report. The Galaxy S21 Ultra will cost 1.595 million won (~ $ 1,469). Both models are expected to cost around 100,000 won less than their predecessors.
Galaxy S21 production: is the base the best?
The reason behind the adjusted prices and production surge is to contain the iPhone 12 series and fill the market gap left by Huawei, by AND News. Samsung can also be encouraged by the popularity of the Galaxy S20 FE – an important device in the company’s cheaper flagship smartphone.
You could argue that Samsung’s new focus on its cheaper model highlights the irrelevance of the Plus and Ultra models, but both variants still have their own features to offer. Samsung’s Ultra model will likely be the only option in the Galaxy S21 series with a 108 MP camera, 5,000mAh battery, and S Pen support. The Plus model will also get a battery upgrade to 4800mAh, according to rumors. These two models also make the base Galaxy S21 an attractive offering if price, not features, is a major concern.
It’s unclear whether the company will lower prices for the Galaxy S21 series similarly in other global markets, but more information will be revealed when the device line-up launches on January 14, 2021.
