615 COVID-19 patients hospitalized; SAWS says boil water advisory lifted for parts of San Antonio

SAINT ANTHONY – San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff briefed the community on the local response to COVID-19 and the winter weather during their briefing on Saturday night.

For the first time this week, Mayor Nirenberg reported on some data received on coronavirus cases in Bexar County. Nirenberg reported 107 cases of coronavirus and seven deaths on Saturday.

The mayor also reported that 615 patients are in hospital, up from 81 from Friday, 232 are in the intensive care unit and 141 are on ventilators.

There have been 62 hospital admissions in the past 24 hours, Nirenberg said.

CPS energy

Nirenberg said CPS Energy is nearing completion of restoring power to the San Antonio area. With the exception of 40 customers, power was restored on Saturday evening.

Although CPS Energy officials said a vehicle crashed into a utility pole overnight Friday, leaving 1,630 customers living near Cupples Road and Menefee Boulevard without power, however those customers have since been restored, Nirenberg reiterated.

The energy company is now working to slow down the customer billing process to remove the impact of this week’s winter weather conditions.

Customers are asked not to worry about their bills at this time and the service will not be disconnected if they are unable to pay at the moment. For more information, click here.

San Antonio Water System

San Antonio Water System CEO Robert Puente announced during the briefing on Saturday that parts of San Antonio are now free of the boil water advisory. This means that they no longer have to boil the water before consuming it. To learn more about areas that are no longer under the boil water advisory, click here.

Customers who are still on the boil advisory may not run out of water, but lack pressure. Puente estimates that most of these issues will be resolved by Monday.

According to SAWS, 10%, or 9% of the San Antonio area still have no water, but teams are still working on restoration efforts.
