At least seven people were shot dead in downtown Portland around 2 a.m. on Saturday, police said.
No one has been arrested, according to Portland Police. The gunman (s) fled the scene in the 300 block of Southwest Third Avenue before police arrived.
The number of gunshot victims could be more than seven, as other victims could have left the scene before police could contact them, according to the sergeant. Kevin Allen, police spokesperson.
Injury to at least one person is considered life threatening.
Allen said there was no known and continuing threat to public safety and that detectives were working to determine the circumstances of the shooting.
Police did not say whether the gunman or shooters were targeting a person or group, or whether investigators had identified any suspects.
The shooting was the latest in an outbreak of gun violence in Portland. Last month, two people were injured in a shooting a few blocks from Saturday’s incident. In this case, the police recovered 28 shell casings.
So far this year, there have been around 570 shooting incidents in the city, more than double the number recorded in the same period in 2020.
Tyrone Jackson, who lives near the scene of the shooting, said he was sleeping in his apartment when gunshots woke him up. Although he had never seen anything like it, Jackson said he would rather stay home at night than go to bars in the area for safety reasons.
Third Avenue is closed between Oak and Washington streets for investigation, police said.
Police initially said eight people were injured, but then revised that figure.
