70-year-old woman dies in Grand Canyon National Park

A tourist died Tuesday in Grand Canyon National Park, becoming the second person this year to do so, authorities said.

The park rangers received a call Tuesday afternoon about a person needing help on the south shore, but by the time help could arrive, the person had fallen, according to a press release from the National Parks Service.

A rescue team of about 15 people used the park's helicopter to locate and recover the body of a 70-year-old woman located about 200 feet under the rim. The woman's name will not be released until her family has been notified, according to the National Parks Service.

We do not know how the woman fell.

A 67-year-old man fell about 400 feet from the south shore and died on April 3.

On March 28, a Hong Kong tourist died in the Hualapai Reserve Canyon, just outside the park's boundaries. He was taking a picture at that time, authorities said.

"The park staff encourages all visitors to travel safely while staying on designated trails and boardwalks, always staying at a safe distance from the edge of the ledge and staying behind grills and fences," he said. Tuesday the National Parks Service.
