75% of Republicans want Trump to play leading role in GOP: poll

A survey from Quinnipiac University determined that 75% of Republican respondents expressed interest in Trump continuing to play a leading role in the GOP, while 21% said they would not.

Sixty percent of all Americans said they didn’t want Trump to play a big role in the Republican Party, including 96% of Democrats and 61% of Independents.

A majority of respondents, 55%, also said the former president should not be allowed to hold an elected post in the future. Republicans have again deviated from the majority, with 87% of them saying Trump should be allowed to hold elected office.

“He may be on the decline, but he’s certainly not out of favor with the GOP. Twice indicted, vilified by Democrats at trial and all but silenced by social media … regardless, Donald Trump keeps a solid foot in the Republican Party, ”said Tim Malloy, poll analyst at Quinnipiac University, in a statement.

The Quinnipiac University survey polled 1,056 adults from February 11 to 14 with a margin of error of 3 percentage points.

Trump was generally expected to be acquitted after a majority of Republican senators voted the trial unconstitutional on February 9 and was formally acquitted on February 13.

Seven Republican senators sided with the Democrats in voting to condemn Trump in the most bipartisan Senate impeachment trial in history. But the Senate failed to achieve the two-thirds majority needed to convict.

About half of poll respondents, at 51%, said they supported the Senate condemning Trump, including 92% Democrats and 50% Independents. A large majority of 89% Republicans said they were against Trump’s conviction.

The House impeached Trump in the last week of his presidency over allegations he incited the mob that stormed the Capitol building on January 6. .

A majority of 54% of respondents in the poll said they believed the former president was responsible for inciting violence on Capitol Hill, and 68% said they didn’t think Trump had done everything that he could to stop the riot once it had started.
