In response to a recent report by Athleticism, 76ers star Joel Embiid on Thursday called the ongoing “situation” between the Philadelphia organization and disgruntled star Ben Simmons “a bit disrespectful.”
“The situation is strange, disappointing, bordering on a little disrespectful to all the guys here who are fighting for their lives,” Embiid said. “Some guys rely on the team to be able to stay in the league and make some money one way or another.”
AthleticismThe report from earlier in the week said Simmons believes his association with Embiid has simply “run its course,” according to a source. According to sources, according to Simmons, the organization’s choice to rely on Embiid’s style is just not conducive to the way he is to play.
“I feel like our teams have always been built around his needs,” Embiid said in response to the report. “So that was pretty surprising to see. I mean, the reason we signed Al (Horford) is (Simmons). We got rid of Jimmy (because) he needed the ball in his hands.”
During the 2018-19 season, Philadelphia traded for Jimmy Butler and Tobias Harris to team up with Embiid and Simmons to face the best in the NBA. After the team heartbreakingly failed via a Game 7 loss at the hands of Kawhi Leonard and the Raptors, the front office had decisions to make with Butler and Harris ready to strike free agency.
The Sixers ultimately decided not to re-sign Butler, allowing him to continue with the Heat via a signing-and-trade deal. Philadelphia would then go on to re-sign Harris while throwing a big contract to veteran great Horford, who was traded in the next offseason.
