A magnitude 8.2 earthquake off the coast of Alaska triggered a tsunami alert for parts of the state on Wednesday evening.
An earthquake was detected about 75 miles southeast of Chignik, Alaska, said the National Weather Service, which issued the tsunami warning.
The warning was in effect for southern Alaska, the Alaska Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands, the Palmer, Alaska Weather Service said, which warned “dangerous and widespread tsunami waves are possible.” , based on the preliminary parameters of the earthquake. A tsunami watch was also issued for Hawaii.
In Kodiak, where the earthquake could be felt, tsunami sirens sounded and people began to move to higher ground.
Perryville, Alaska, with a population of 113, is 57 miles northwest of the quake’s epicenter, the United States Geological Survey said. Anchorage, with a population of nearly 300,000, was about 500 miles to the northeast.
Since 1990, there have been 17 earthquakes of magnitude 8.2 or greater, according to USGS data.
