The desperate search of an 8-year-old girl in Texas, abducted while she was walking with her mother, ended early Sunday when authorities were able to locate the child through to two church members on alert who spotted the suspect's vehicle, according to police.

The Fort Worth Police Department said on Twitter, shortly before 2:30 am, that Salem Sabatka had been found safe in a Forest Hill hotel, a suburb of Fort Worth, and that a suspect was in custody. .

"I was not near the family, but I was listening on the radio when it came out and I was screaming and applauding," police spokesman Buddy Calzada told reporters. Sabatka was kidnapped just after 18:30. On Saturday, while walking with her mother, a man grabbed the girl and put her in her car.

The mother jumped into the car and "fought fiercely", but she was pushed outside and the man left, police said. The camera of a neighbor seized the moment Salem's mother was ejected from the car.

After the authorities issued an Amber alert containing a description of the suspect's vehicle – a four-door gray sedan – two members of a local church called authorities when they sighted the car at a Forest Hill hotel.

Calzada congratulated the two church members for their actions and the "phenomenal feeling" of helping to locate the child. The two church members, who have not yet been identified, viewed the photos on social media and decided to go out alone to help the authorities find the car.

"These are our heroes tonight," Calzada told reporters. "We had citizens who did their best to help find them."

The police arrived at the scene and spotted the room where the suspect was, where they found Salem.

Calzada said the 8-year-old appeared to be in good condition and had been taken to a local hospital for examination by doctors.

The suspect, Michael Webb, 51, is not a family member and faces aggravated kidnapping charges, according to Calzada.

Authorities announced in the coming days that they planned to reveal more information about the two church members who helped find the girl.
