8-year-old boy finds firearm and accidentally fires mom at university baseball game, police say

A university baseball game was postponed Tuesday night in Tennessee after an 8-year-old boy reportedly shot his mother to explain what the police would have described as an accident, according to reports.

The unidentified woman was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, but her condition was later re-established to become stable, reported Memphis FOX 13.

The owner of the gun has been arrested and the police are conducting an investigation to determine if they will file a complaint, authorities said.

The shooting took place at the American Stadium in Millington, where the University of Memphis Tigers was playing against the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Police said the child had found the gun in an old car exposed at the stadium and had accidentally shot his mother in the first round of the match, around 6:45 pm.

"The miner believed that it was a toy pistol. He took the gun, pulled the trigger, and accidentally shot his mother, "said Mark Dunbar, Millington Police Chief, according to WMC-TV in Memphis, the match was halted, according to FOX 13.

The University of Memphis issued a statement after the incident.

"We are saddened by the unfortunate accidental shooting at the Millington American Stadium baseball game," said the University Sports Department in a statement, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "The University of Memphis cooperates fully with the authorities of the investigation.Our deepest thoughts go to the family."
