ST. LOUIS (AP) – Police announced that an 8-year-old girl had been killed and three others injured in a shootout near a high school in St. Louis, bringing to at least a dozen more children. 39 children shot in the city since then. June.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the shooting occurred around 8 pm. Friday in front of Harold's restaurant Chop Suey in the district of the Academy.

Police chief John Hayden said the girl, identified by the police as Jurnee Thompson, and her family had attended a football exhibition a block away from Soldan High School. Hayden said that fighting broke out during the event and that the police attempted to clear the area when gunshots were fired.

Police said the wounded included two 16-year-old boys and a 64-year-old woman. Hayden says that "two or three" of the people who were shot were related.

Hayden said several people had been arrested for questioning.

St. Louis has witnessed a string of children shot dead this summer. A 7-year-old boy was shot dead on August 13 while he was standing near a teenager and two other children on the north side of the city.

The shootings involving children angered the city police chief and frustrated his leaders. Police said that much of the violence was linked to drug trafficking and that the children were trapped.
