9 hidden iOS 13 features that Apple has not announced to WWDC

iOS 13 will be a real update, available for free this fall for iPhone SE, 6S and newer models. It comes with many features advertised as a system-wide dark mode, a redesigned Photos application, new Memoji customizations and more.

But as with previous versions of iOS, the software update also contains a slew of lesser known features that are not as flashy but are welcome. Here are the eight for which we are the most enthusiastic – and we hope that Apple will resume.

1. Discrete volume control

People hatred the current volume control. When you press the volume buttons on your iOS device, a large volume graph appears in the middle of the screen, blocking your content.

Fortunately, Apple has regained consciousness and on iOS 13, the volume control has been redesigned to not obscure your screen. Check it out!

Instead of covering the center of the screen, the new volume control slides in parallel from the volume buttons, then back down before you retreat.

2. Best Wifi and Bluetooth settings in the Control Center

Another disadvantage that Apple corrected in iOS 13: the selection of Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth accessories. Currently, the shortcut buttons for Wifi and Bluetooth in the Control Center only allow to enable / disable. To choose a network or accessory, you must go to the Settings application.

In iOS 13, you do not even need to open the Settings application. Wifi networks and Bluetooth accessories can be selected directly from the corresponding buttons in the Control Center. Android had this feature for years, so seeing it in iOS feels like a big finally.

3. Quick actions without 3D Touch

3D Touch would be removed from the new successors of this year's iPhone XR and XS. To prepare for his death, Apple has ended the possibility of touching the icon of a 3D Touch application to display its "Quick Actions" menu.

To be clear: the fast actions will not disappear in iOS 13 – you long press instead of difficult by pressing an application icon, but the new method to activate it is different. For iPhone XR users, Quick Actions is brand new. IPads that support iOS 13 will also have fast action for the first time. (The iPads never had fast action because they lacked 3D Touch, but not anymore.)

4. Adjustable writing keyboard

This one is intended for people who use the keyboard to write in Chinese. If you have always wanted more space to write more kanji for multiple words or complete sentences, or a larger writing area to hand write larger characters, here is good news!

5. Optimized battery charging

If you know anything about lithium-ion batteries, you'll know you do not want to have them loaded up to 100 percent all the time. According to studies, keeping them at such a high level is actually worse for their health.

Ideally, you want to keep a lithium-ion battery charged at about 80% and discharge it at about 20% for an optimal lifetime. This will preserve the health of your battery and prolong it.

In iOS 13, a new "Optimized Battery Charge" rocker is included in the battery settings, which "learns from your daily charging routine" before charging above 80%. It remains to be seen if this will actually improve the battery life of your iPhone. At the very least, Apple educates users on how to preserve the batteries of their iPhone so they do not run out so quickly.

6. iMessage and FaceTime support on two SIM cards

A Reddit user has confirmed that iPhone users with two active SIM cards on their devices can send and receive iMessages from both numbers in iOS 13. The same goes for making and receiving FaceTime calls .

Currently, in iOS 12, you can only use iMessage and FaceTime on a single designated number. In iOS 13, both services work on both SIM cards. Yay!

7. Remove apps from the App Store

Removing apps can be a real pain in the ass on the iPhone. You have to tap an app icon until it shakes and that an "x" appears, then look in your home screen for apps you want to get rid of.

In iOS 13, Apple has added another way to remove apps: from the App Store. Dragging left on an application opens an option to delete it. No more searching for apps on your home screen.

8. Adjust the perspective in the photos

In addition to adding many new photo effects adjustment tools to the Photos application, Apple offers two new tools to adjust the perspective. Instagram had the opportunity to adjust the tilt of the x and y axis for a photo (but not for the video) for a very long time, and you will soon be able to do it in the camera. Photos application.

New perspective adjustments can be found in the trimming tool when editing a photo or video. It's pretty cool!

9. AirDrop steps back

All the features of iOS 13 are not optimal. I've found at least one new change that looks like a step back, and that's AirDrop.

On current iOS versions, when you access AirDrop from a file (such as a photo), the share sheet displays all the devices to which you can send it. However, in iOS 13, AirDropping requires an extra step: first press the AirDrop icon, then press then an available device.

As a person using AirDrop daily to move files between my iPhone, iPad and Mac, I'm not a fan of this change. I understand why Apple has created – the area is reserved for sharing suggestions with contacts within apps such as Messages and Mail in iOS 13 – but that does not change the fact that AirDrop is now a three-step process (sharing icon, then AirDrop icon, and then device) instead of a two-step.
