CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – Nine marines from Camp Pendleton's California base have been charged with human smuggling.

Among these are two riflemen arrested by US Border Patrol officers on July 3, as they were leaving the US-Mexico border with three Mexicans at the back of a BMW.

The army corps said Friday that the Marines, all corporals, had been accused of violating the Uniform Code of Military Justice by carrying or plotting to illegally transport immigrants to the country.

Four other Marines who were also detained in the investigation of human trafficking were not specifically charged with trafficking. They face other charges, including non-compliance, drunkenness, endangerment, larceny and perjury.

The Marine Corps stated that none of the indicted persons were involved in the military support mission at the US-Southwest border.
