Starbucks publishes its famous Pumpkin Spice Latte at the end of the summer and this year is not different. While the unofficial send-off to the fall was announced, the sweet and spicy coffee-based drink has been a mainstay of the chain for the past 16 years and has generated a cult following.

Whether you're a fan or you're still trying to understand the hype, there are some spice pumpkin lattice tips that you should try to make sure you get the most out of the seasonal flavor. Make it healthier, sweeter or cheaper, here are 9 ways to use Starbucks' spice pumpkin taste.

Make it a lighter PSL drink

Although Starbucks has not yet created a "lean" version of sugar-free pumpkin spice syrup, there are several ways to lighten the drink. You can ask for less syrup syrup (for reference, a high PSL contains three guns), you can request skimmed skim milk or a dairy-free substitute and you can order it without whipped topping.

Side note: There is currently no way to create a dairy-free PSL because pumpkin and spice syrup contains dairy products.

Order your iced PSL or Frappuccino

Like any other Starbucks flavored milk café, you can order your PSL poured on ice. If you want all the flavor of ice-cream pumpkin but not coffee, you can also order a Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino.

Add extra espresso to your PSL

For an extra dose of caffeine and a touch of extra coffee flavor, add an extra dose of espresso to your latte while maintaining the same level of syrup.

Combine pumpkin spices with hot chocolate

Listen to us: chocolate and pumpkin combined have long made good desserts (such as whoopie pies with chocolate pumpkin!). So, order yourself a hot chocolate and ask for a pump or two pumpkin spice aromas for the ultimate cup of paradise.

Add pumpkin spice to your chai tea drink

Chai tea, also known as masala chai, is a black tea often spiced with cardamom, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon, star anise, fennel or pepper. Mixed with pumpkin spices (which are mostly cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves), it provides new warmth. Add it to a cup of ordinary hot tea or mix it with a milk tea chai.
