TOWNSHIP OF FAWN RIVER, Mich. (AP) – A 9-year-old boy has been charged with murder for his mother's fatal murder in their home in southern Michigan, according to court documents.

The woman was found early Monday morning in Fawn River Township, St. Joseph County Attorney John McDonough, told WWMT-TV. Fawn River Township is about 160 miles west-southwest of Detroit.

The boy is also accused of using a firearm while committing a crime. Documents filed Tuesday at the St. Joseph County Court of Appeal show that the woman was hit by a rifle. NBC affiliate WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids first reported the charges.

Associated Press does not identify the victim as this would identify the minor suspect. The boy was undergoing a psychiatric assessment at a state-run juvenile facility, according to county sheriff Bradley Balk.

It is not known whether he was charged in adulthood or in adulthood. The authorities did not disclose the circumstances of the murder nor the reasons why the child was charged.

McDonough and Balk did not respond to messages left by an AP reporter asking for comment.

Sturgis Public School Superintendent Arthur Ebert made a statement to the media, but said nothing about the child or his situation.

"As a district, our goal is to provide support to our students, staff, and community," said Ebert. "We are limited in what we can share because of the privacy laws and the sensitive nature of this tragedy."
