AMERICAN FORK (KSL.com) – A 9-year-old boy died Wednesday after being left in a parked car on a hot summer day, police said.

The boy was left in a car parked near Roost Services, 42 N. 200 East, which provides services to people with developmental disabilities, according to American Fork Police Lt. Josh Christensen. He was in the custody of this facility when he was abandoned by a staff member, he added.

Emergency personnel received the call around 1:22 p.m. and found the boy unconscious in the car when they arrived at the scene, Christensen said. The boy had been left in the car for over two hours.

Temperatures reached 94 degrees in American Fork in the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service, as a continuing heat wave grips the area.

“It is an absolute tragic event which is very difficult for everyone involved – the staff, the family, the first responders – some of the officers and firefighters who responded were really affected,” Christensen said.

Police are trying to determine if the boy was tied up, if the car was locked for children, or if the boy was unable to get out of the car due to his disability.

Investigators are trying to determine if there was a criminal element involved in the incident, Christensen said.

The identity of the boy was not disclosed.
