Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) – You must have felt bad for the choice of the Sabers draft, Jacob Bryson. Providence Junior had a very good game for the Brothers, but that was not enough as Minnesota Duluth won 4-1 to win their third straight NCAA Finals.
The match was tight as Duluth scored two goals in the empty net to become the first team to qualify for three consecutive Frozen Four finals since 2008, when Boston College reversed the game.
During the first period, Providence and Minnesota Duluth almost all felt. We did not see many chances, but we saw two goals denied and several hits.
The Bulldogs just had bad luck on the first unauthorized goal. Hayden Hawkey of Providence did not freeze the puck, but the referee lost sight of the puck before Jade Miller put the puck into the goal.
The second was submitted to a referee's review which took about five minutes. The fans began to boo and rightly so. It was pretty obvious that Cole Koepke made his comeback in Hawkey before the shot had arrived. Koepke swept the puck in the rebound, but the damage was already done.
I think the fans would be much better at replaying the sport if they only had a minute to decide. If they can not decide by then, you follow the call on the ice.
The fourth round pick of the Sabers 2017, Jacob Bryson, was quick from the start. The kid is listed at 5'9, but it may be generous, but I was impressed after just 20 minutes.
In his second shift only, Bryson left the bench to force Hunter Shepard to stop.
Later in the period, he flew up the wall of the left wing and found Kasper Bjorkqvist in front, Shepard performing his only hard rescue of the period.
Bryson also looked good in a two-man situation against Noah Cates, with 6'2 and 185 pounds, and pulled him out of harm's way.
I hoped that a big hit from Duluth's Louie Roehl in the center of the ice would wake up the match and that it was happening physically and not offending.
Bryson played a key role in the Providence formation by leveling the game in the second period. His rocket power led Josh Wilkins to his 20th goal of the season. Wilkins is an untapped junior and NHL teams will knock on his door after the Frozen Four.
Minnesota Duluth opened the scoring when Justin Richards fired a shot from the right wing wall at Hawkey's center.
After the game, Bryson said he enjoyed all the experience, especially since it was in his NHL city: "Playing Buffalo tonight was fun and a great experience."
Bryson has made a huge leap forward in his game since being named in 2017. He said: "One of the big problems has been consistency I also hold my teammates accountable. "
Thursday was my first chance to see Bryson in concert in a college game. He is very small, but has the strength to handle 6'2 forward. He says it comes from the legs: "It's an experience, it's the whole life I've lived and I've learned to take advantage of those opportunities and I have to be physical, especially to my size.
Bryson said it was too early to think he would leave Providence a year earlier to sign with the Sabers. If he does, he will probably join the Amerks immediately.
