Cramer's opposition could also leave Cain dead in the stalemate of the Senate Banking Committee, even before it reaches the Senate for a vote.

The news of Cramer's opposition was announced as White House support for Cain also seemed to weaken on Thursday.

"Yes, we are at the moment," said Larry Kudlow, director of the National Council of the Economy, at a press conference in Washington asking whether the White House still supported Cain, a former leader of the 2012 Republican Party's presidential nominee and pizzeria. Kudlow is a former contributor to CNBC.

"It's under verification, we'll see how it goes," added Kudlow. "I do not want to prejudge one way or the other."

Former GOP presidential candidate in 2012, Cain suspended his main campaign in December 2011 after it appeared that three women had accused him of sexual harassment at the workplace, that one Fourth wife had accused him of sexual assault and that a fifth woman had claimed that she and Cain had had an extramarital affair of 13 years.

Cain denied all the allegations. Nevertheless, the possibility of reconsidering the allegations during a confirmation hearing before the Senate and having to publicly defend Cain probably has little appeal for the White House or for Republican Senators in the alternative states.
