T.J. Dillashaw on Friday released a video statement on Instagram, apologizing for the news of her two-year suspension at USADA.
Earlier this week, USADA, the UFC's anti-doping partner, announced that Dillashaw had tested positive for the banned EPO substance and that it would be banned from competition until January 2021. Dillashaw gave up in his weight-cock UFC last month, after the announcement of his failure of a drug test. and was suspended for one year by the New York State Sports Commission (NYSAC).
In the video statement released Friday, Dillashaw seemed to agree to take EPO, a drug that can increase performance and stamina.
"I was wrong," said Dillashaw. "It's hard for me to try to forgive myself for that, when I should have trouble doing it. I should have trouble forgiving myself. … I understand the criticisms and reviews that come to me.
Dillashaw, 33, said he "needed a man" for what he had done. The native Californian said that he had accepted all the penalties from USADA and that he "had not tried to fight this case". Dillashaw was also fined $ 10,000 by NYSAC.
Dillashaw has announced his intention to return in 2021 better than before. He stated that he had undergone a right shoulder surgery on Thursday and that he was soon planning to have surgery on his left shoulder. Dillashaw said he has been suffering from a rotator cuff and torn labrum for years.
People have said that he should "disappear" after the failure of the drug test, said Dillashaw, but he will not do it. He said that he owed his 15-month-old son to deal with this situation and show him how to acknowledge his mistakes.
"It weighs on me," said Dillashaw. "Not to say that it should not, it's who I am, I'm a fighter, I'll make my way through this one."
Dillashaw is apologetic to his fans, his family, his coaches and his teammates for what he called "error" and "bad decision".
"It will not be the end of me, I will be back," said Dillashaw. "I promise you now that I'll be better, come back stronger. And I'm going to prove that the hard work I put in place brought me where I am, not the bad decision I made. All I can do to redeem myself is to work hard. "
Dillashaw (16-4) is a two-time former UFC bantamweight champion. He failed in his attempt to win the flyweight title, losing to Henry Cejudo in January through the first round TKO. This is the anti-doping test in competition related to this fight in which Dillashaw was positive for EPO. USADA has since returned to a previous Dillashaw sample taken on December 28 and found EPO in this sample as well.
Before the last few months, Dillashaw was considered one of the best pound-to-pound fighters in the world.
