BMW spotted tests 840i at the Nürburgring

A new spy video indicates that the BMW 840i is on its way. It would probably occupy a prominent place in the coupe lineup.

The exterior of the 840i seems largely identical to that of the existing M850i, with the exception of the badge on the back. The absence of the xDrive emblem suggests that it could be from a rear-wheel drive variant of the 8-series.

The moniker 840i suggests two possible engines for this vehicle. The 540i is equipped with 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engines developing 335 horsepower (250 kilowatts) and 332 lb-ft (450 newton meters). Alternatively, the M340i has a version of this crusher with 382 hp (285 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm). This latter option appears to be the best choice, as the higher performance is more in line with the sporting behavior of Series 8.

In the United States, the 8 Series is currently only available as an M850i xDrive with a 4.4-liter, twin-turbo V8 developing 523 horsepower (390 kilowatts) and 553 lb-ft ( 750 newton meters). Europeans have the option of the 840d xDrive with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo offering a torque of 315 hp (235 kW) and a torque of 502 lb-ft (680 Newton-meters).

If BMW decides to offer the 840i in the US, it will likely cost less than the M850i base price of $ 112,895, including the destination. It seems possible that the new basic model even has a starting cost of less than six digits.

As this is the first time we see it, we still do not know when the 840i could debut. The development should however be relatively easy, as the Series 8 chassis is complete and the 3.0-liter in-line six is already available. Engineers just need to make sure the parts work well together and fine-tune the electronic aids properly.
