At a press conference held today in the Roosevelt Hall of the White House, the President presented a number of initiatives to accelerate the role of the United States in the 5G race.
"It's the future for me," said Trump, opening the press conference with Ajit Pai, Ivanka Trump and a room filled with communications representatives with cowboy and safety helmets.
"It's all about 5G now," Trump told the audience. "We were in 4G and everybody said we had to have 4G, and then they told us before," we need to have 3G, "and now we have to have 5G, and 5G is a big problem and it will be there for a moment, and at some point we'll talk about number six. "
The seemingly off-script moment echoes Trump's recent call on Twitter in the United States for them to acquire 6G technology "as soon as possible". technology that does not really exist yet.
Trump took the opportunity to downplay previous rumors that the government could create its own 5G network, preferring instead a free market method, while trying to control the government's capabilities. "In the United States, our approach is focused on the private sector and the private sector," he added. "The government does not have to spend a lot of money."
In recent months, however, both the administration and the FCC have discuss ways to make America more competitive in the race for cellular technology that is becoming ubiquitous. Earlier in the day, the FCC announced its intention to hold the largest spectrum auction in its history in the United States, offering tapes to mobile operators. The planned auction is scheduled to begin December 10th.
"To accelerate and encourage these investments, my administration is releasing as much wireless spectrum as needed," Trump added, echoing Pai's plans.
Earlier in the day, Pai and FAC also proposed a $ 20.4 billion fund to link rural areas. The president said the commission estimated that the fund could connect up to four million small businesses and residences over the next decade.
The focus is understandable, of course. The value of 5G will go far beyond faster smartphones, providing connections for a wide range of IoT and smart technologies, and potentially contributing to power elements such as robotics and autonomous vehicles. Technology will undeniably be a key economic driver, affecting even invisible segments of the US workforce.
